Norwegian and German premiere of SUITE this year!
Today the full programme for the upcoming Nordic Music Days 2019 was announced. I’m very happy to say that my piece SUITE was selected for performance at this years festival, which is held in Bodø, Norway. The Nordic Music Days was founded in 1888 and is therefore the oldest festival for contemporary music in the Nordic region. This year over 600 works were submitted and the compact program will present about 60 composers from all over the Nordic region! SUITE will be performed @ the Stormen Cultural Center by Norwegian Cikada Ensemble on November 15th 2019.
Later this month I will travel to Freiburg, where ensemble recherche will give SUITE its German premiere in a concert at the EnsembleHaus, May15th.SUITE is dedicated to ensemble recherche, who I wrote the piece for between 2014 and 2018. Looking very much forward to work with them again.

Thank you to the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, conductor Andreas Delfs, producer Preben Iwan, all the people behind the stage and not least the audience for an intense and inspiring week, which ended with a concert performance of the symphonic song cycle BEINTA by Anna Katrin Øssursdóttir Egilstrøð and yours truly on Saturday April 27th.
In the week leading up to the performance we did a studio recording of the piece, which we are looking very much forward to release in the near future. You should too, the orchestra sounds like a million.
A special thanks must also go to the film duo Rammatik for their poetic film elements, the AUT concert organization – Aarhus Unge Tonekunstnere – which commissioned the piece for their 50th anniversary in 2016 and not least the SPOT Festival, which hosted the first performance for almost three yearsago. BEINTA is of course the result of the artistic collaboration between Anna Katrin and I, but the piece is also the testimate of strong local collaborations. Thank you Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, SPOT and AUT for this opportunity. May others be as fortunate as we were.

New performance of BEINTA
BEINTA is a symphonic song-cycle of darkness and longing, about daring to set out into the unknown. Anna Katrin Øssursdóttir Egilstrøð and I wanted to explore and combine sonorities from contemporary classical music and alternative pop accompanied by the raw, atmospheric work of Faroese film duo Rammatik. The piece was premiered in 2016 as a part of AUT‘s 50th Anniversary at the SPOT Festival in collaboration with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. This year the piece will be performed in Symfonisk Sal, Musikhuset Aarhus, Saturday April 27th 2019 at 1pm. Tickets here!

Talk @ University of Cambridge
Thank you to Reader in Composition Richard Causton from the Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, for inviting me to present a Talk about my music this week. It was very nice to meet some of the composers studying at the University and to visit Cambridge for the first time.
Unfortunately I didn’t have as much time to explore the city as I would’ve liked, but courtesy of RIchard Causton I got a special guided tour in King’s College and not least the Chapel. The vaulted ceiling was overwhelmingly beautiful.

Warsaw Autumn 2018
A very heartfelt thanks to ensemble recherche for a great premiere of my SUITE last night at Warsaw Autumn. I started working on the piece in 2014 as a participant in the ensemble’s ‘Klassen-Arbeit’ workshop-project and with support of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung in 2016, I was able to finish an additional movement, which was first performed at the Ultraschall Festival in 2017. Now, with the invitation from Warsaw Autumn, the complete 20 mins SUITE could be finished. Thank you so much to Warsaw Autumn for this opportunity!

New chairman in AUT
At this year’s General Assembly I stepped down as board member of AUT – Aarhus Unge Tonekunstnere – after 10 years in the organisation. It’s been my pleasure to be a part of the board of this fantastic platform for New Music and sound art founded in 1966. Especially under the era of Line Tjørnhøj from 2011 to last year, AUT marked itself as a significant part of the Danish music environment with a broad international network and strong local collaborations. I’m looking forward to dedicate more time to my upcoming compositions and follow AUT from the sideline. Best wishes to the new board and chairman elect, Frederik Sakham Jalving Lomborg. Read a small article about the change of chairman here. (in DK)

The Saint Bernard Syndicate @ Tribeca Film Festival
Mads Brügger’s first feature film, The Saint Bernard Syndicate, will receive its official premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival! The festival writes: “Subversive satirist Mads Brügger’s latest [film] is an odd-couple comedy about the pitfalls of striking out into the economic frontier; it charts two hapless Danes’ scheme to sell Saint Bernards to China’s middle class.”
Back in January 2017 I was asked to do two arrangements for a local Chinese string quartet for a scene in the film. I must admit that I still don’t know if the scene is in the film or not, but I’m looking forward to see this film, because it features two of my friends, Frederik Cilius and Rasmus Bruun, as the main characters.

Tutti the Tiger online!
Aarhus Symphony Orchestra‘s ‘Musikkens Børn‘ is now online. If you are having a baby in Aarhus in 2018, then I have great news for you. If you register your baby and yourself you will be offered short baby-concerts with musicians from the orchestra close to your home and you will get a lot of ideas to how to use the music with your child and share it within your family. As your baby becomes older, you will be invited to come and hear the whole symphony orchestra in concert!
I was so lucky to be asked to compose music for the infomercial about the project. Thank you to Søren Kinch Hansen, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Henrik Winther Hansen, who recorded the music in August 2017.
I was so lucky to be the host at two New Year’s Concerts at the Copenhagen Opera House. A heartfelt thank you to the festive audience, the Royal Danish Orchestra, conductor Christian Vasquez, the soloists (Sofie Elkjær Jensen, David Kempster, Marianna Shirinyan and members of the orchesta) and not least all the people behind the scenes. It was a big pleasure to see how all the different departments at the Royal Danish Theater works together on one final product. It is a type of cooperation, where there is a short way from thought to action and where tradition and innovation walks hand in hand. If I didn’t like the Royal Danish Theater before, I do now! Happy New Year!

Composer-in-Residence @ Aarhus Symphony Orchestra
I was a high school student at Viborg Katedralskole, when I heard a symphony orchestra live for the first time. It changed my life. The orchestra back then was Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra has ever since had a special place in my heart. It is therefore almost unreal, that I now get the possibility to fulfil an old dream: I’m the next composer-in-residence for Aarhus Symphony Orchestra from 2017 to 2021. Thank you to the Danish Arts Council‘s Grant Committee for Music and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra for making this happen. I’m looking so much forward to this. Read the press release from the Danish Arts Council here (in Danish)

Very happy to take over after Line Tjørnhøj, who has done massive work to make AUT an important voice for the new and experimenting sounds of our time. I hope to continue this work with as much success as Line has.

Great reviews of BEINTA!
5 hearts out of 6 in Politiken with the words: “[…] a piece for orchestra, that deserves to be heard much more than the premiere at SPOT Festival.” 5 stars out of 6 in Nordjyske with the words: “When the strings droned and the horns roared and the rhythm decreased it was so magnificent that the jaw dropped all the way to the floor. The 40 minutes went by way too fast.” 4 stars out of 6 in Stiften with the words: “Very interesting and very skilfully made.”
Today Anna Katrin Øssursdóttir Egilstrøð and I had a recording session with a string quartet. The concert is arranged in collaboration with AUT, SPOT Festival and the orchestra. Thank you for your help to the quartet (Anna Jalving, Daniel Tølbøll Mortensen, Robert Karlsson & Malthe Volfinger Højager) and sound artist Sebastian Edin. Stay tuned!

Air @ Seismograf
Sune Anderberg has written a reportage from this year’s Pulsar Festival for the webmagazine Seismograf. Several pieces from the festival are mentioned, including my piece Air for piccolo flute, violin and viola.
Sune Anderberg writes: “The wind blows were the same in Allan Gravgaard Madsen’s Air (2015), but the irony was replaced by fervour. The trio consists of piccolo flute, violin and viola, and the tempo is patient. In long passages of the piece the instruments simply blows air, like with the piece of Winther Christensen. Slowly a pitch appears on stage, and in four movements the composer gently moves between pitch and silence and air.”
This Saturday my piece ‘Air’ will be performed at the annual festival RAMA arranged by the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus. The concert in Symphonic Hall, Musikhuset Aarhus, at 10pm will also feature pieces by Eric Sutherland, Klavs Kehlet Hansen, Loïc Destremau, Óscar Escudero, Lasse D. Hansen & Mette Nielsen performed by a dream team of musicians.
Arrangement on new CD
The vocal group Concert Clemens will publish a new CD this year with Christmas arrangement by different composers. I’m one of the them. Thank you to Carsten Seyer-Hansen and Concert Clemens for this opportunity. See a teaser for the CD below!
Happy New Year 2015!
2015 has been very eventful and many new friendships were made. Thank you to all the musicians and artists that I have been so fortunate to work with in 2015! (None mentioned, none forgotten.) To all a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2016! See you!
This Saturday I will be participating as a part of the Danish team in the tribute to legendary Nordic quiz show Kontrapunkt. The new episodes will focus only on contemporary music and will be available online. Produced by MAGMA.
My piece Tanz Suite will be performed by the echtzeitEnsemble conducted by Christoph Löser as a part of the NEXT GENERATION-programme in connection to the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2015. Eight other composers were chosen out of over 100 submissions for the programme and the nine selected pieces will be performed during the 15th and 16th of October. Together with Lasse D. Hansen, Klavs Kehlet Hansen and Loïc Destremau I was coaching teenage music students in composition in the beginning of May. The students were from Aarhus Musikskole and other institutions and the whole project was a part of SPOR New Music School. The young composers / music students performed their own pieces at a concert shared with Århus Sinfonietta at Granhøj Dans, Aarhus, May 9th. The concert was a part of the SPOR Festival that took place from 7th to 10th of May 2015. See Ida Bach Jensen’s documentary below! (in Danish)
After 19 episodes Frederik and I will stop hosting Taktløs, our radio show at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. Frederik Cilius is busy and very successful with other projects and I have decided to focus on my Advanced Postgraduate Diploma from the Composition Department at the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus. Both Frederik and I had fun making the show and its fate is now in the hands of the editors. You can still hear our 19 episodes here!

Thank you for a fantastic first edition of the Panorama Festival the 27th and 28th of June!
The Composition Department wanted to make a festival with a positive and welcoming atmosphere, where we could present some the works and experiments we have worked on for the last couple of years. Thanks to massive support from Århus Sinfonietta, AUT (Aarhus Unge Tonekunstnere), the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, and to the many guest musicians from places like USA, Finland, Austria, Estonia, Spain, Norway and Denmark it happened!
Thank you to the well-known and new interested audience at the concerts! We are also happy to see the interest from the press with articles on different website, in the news paper and local television (10:53 into this clip).
We have a very encouraging environment for contemporary music in Aarhus and after the Panorama Festival it’s difficult to be pessimistic.
